The pros don’t use the FIVE in road races. They’d love to, but the UCI rules don’t allow it. So why make them? Because the team at Black Inc have a passion for cycling, engineering and innovation that’s overflowing…and because they can.
The FIVE is a handcrafted monocoque, meaning the rim and spokes are made in one piece, and represents the pinnacle of Black Inc’s design and manufacturing abilities. The rim and spokes each uses aero profiles derived from NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, predecessor to NASA and the godfathers of aero) shapes and optimised for this purpose using advanced CFD software. The result is a wheel with a 30mm rim depth that’s extremely stable in gusty conditions and weighs just 1318g, yet delivers the low drag of a much deeper and heavier wheel.
The structural performance is equal to the aerodynamics. The carbon layup (the placement and alignment of the fibres) is tuned to deliver a compliant ride along with very high lateral stiffness which makes the FIVE incredibly responsive.
